November 18, 2008
Sarasota, FL - Released this fall, the Panasonic HPX170 is a tapeless HD (P2) camcorder that builds upon the HVX200 by offering HD-SDI, increased frame rates, Dynamic Range Stretch and more. Key elements of the HVX200 are still incorporated, including the same CCD block and DSP, and cool features for event work like "loop record" – but this new model is strictly tapeless.
For a closer look at the HPX170, WEVA NEWS MINUTE producer Bruce Himmelblau and videographer Steve Eisen caught up with Panasonic’s Jan Crittenden in Chicago – WATCH HERE in HD (Edited by Sue Lawson - allow for QT download.)
Using the two P2 card slots, videographers can record up to 64 continuous minutes of the highest quality DVCPRO HD recording using 32GB P2 cards. The 170 offers instant random access to recorded HD or SD content to speed workflow.
The HPX170 records 1080p, 1080i, 720p , 480p and 480i. Features include a 13X Leica Dicomar zoom lens with a 28mm wide-angle setting (the widest in its class), pre-record, loop, interval, and single-frame recording, variable frame rate recording, 24p recording, focusing aids, waveform monitor/vectorscope, full remote focus/iris/zoom, hot-swapping for non-stop recording, plus a 5-year limited P2 HD warranty - and it weighs only 4.2 lbs.
Building upon the HVX200, the HPX170 is equipped with new advanced 1/3-inch 16:9 3-CCDs and a high-performance Digital Signal Processor with 14-bit A/D conversion and 19-bit processing. The camcorder also features a built-in stereo microphone and two-channel XLR audio input terminals supporting 48V phantom power supply with a selectable mic/line; and manual audio level volume (two-channel).
The HPX 170 records in DV25, DVCPRO50, and DVCPROHD and is switchable between 16:9/4:3 aspect ratios. The camera also offers a 20-step frame rate selection in 720p mode for variable-speed shooting in the 12fps to 60fps range to acquire fast- or slow-motion in-camera effects. For added creative flexibility, videographers can select from a variety of advanced gamma functions and settings including a "CineGamma" mode.
The HPX170 is equipped with an HD/SD-SDI output standard for live feed productions as well as for editing and monitoring. It also has IEEE 1394 and USB 2.0 interfaces for fast P2 content transfer into NLE systems, and offers a composite output, component output (mini D-terminal) and a time-code setting via IEEE 1394.
