BenQ To Release Blu-ray Burner in August

Taiwan - BenQ, Taiwan's premier manufacturer of mobile phones and computers has announced plans to release in August, their new optical disk device that utilizes the Blu-ray high-definition DVD storage format, according to Reuters. The expected US price will be about $1,022.
BenQ's progress on Blu-ray equipment was reported in WEVA Industry News last month (Click Here). By releasing a Blu-ray burner in August about the time of WEVA EXPO 2006, BenQ would be positioned alongside Sony, Philips and Pioneer as one of the first manufacturers out of the gate with Blu-ray.
According to Reuters, "Low prices and early availability of Blu-ray devices are important in the emerging battle for the next DVD standard. Blu-ray and HD DVD offer up to 50GB of storage on a DVD-size disk. Most Blu-ray and HD DVD players will also play back and burn CDs and standard DVDs."
