Sony Postpones Release of Playstation3 Until November
March 15, 2006
Tokyo, JP - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it would launch Playstation3 (PS3) in early November 2006 in Japan, North America and Europe simultaneously.
With a monthly production capacity of one million units, SCEI says they "will push forward a powerful product launch to spread the platform rapidly throughout the world, together with a strong and attractive lineup of PS3 game titles." No pricing was announced.
PS3 incorporates the final specifications of BD (Blu-ray Disc), and, according to Sony, the computing power of PS3 enables playback of BD software at a high bit rate.
With a maximum storage capacity of 50 GB (dual layer) and robust security, BD is a storage medium that delivers digital entertainment content such as games and movies at a high level of image quality.
PS3 is designed to be compatible with a vast lineup of television sets currently out in the market, from standard-definition TV to full high-definition TV.
Users can also connect PS3 to high-speed broadband network through Gigabit Ethernet and comfortably enjoy a wide-range of rich content and services over the network.
SCEI, together with the support and cooperation of game content creators around the world, stated that they will strongly promote the creation of a new world of computer entertainment available on PS3.
WEVA Industry News reported last January (Blu-ray Disc Association Format Specifications) that the Blu-ray Disc Association announced that the format specification had been completed and that licensing was ready to begin for BD-ROM, BD-RE and BD-R. The completion of the specification now enables content providers and manufacturers to begin the process of producing Blu-ray Disc products for a wide variety of uses.
A few weeks ago Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced May 23, 2006 as the date for the first eight releases of Blu-ray disc movies. This is to coincide with the expected release of the first Blu-ray disc (BD) players announced by Samsung.
Sony and Pioneer are expected to follow with their brand of BD players. Sony Pictures said another eight movies will come out in June. While Sony did not specify list prices for the Blu-ray disc releases, it did announce that wholesale pricing would be 15-20% greater than current DVD movies.
