Sony Previews Pro HDV Format, Intros New HDCAM
April 19, 2004
Las Vegas, NV - Sony will display at NAB a prototype HDV camcorder that can record 1080i high-definition video and also includes several features to provide a total professional solution compatible with the HDV format, including nonlinear editing systems and an i.LINK interface for HD-SDI conversion.
The prototype was shown in Europe in March, and described in the WEVA.com Industry News section. Click here
Sony is also expanding tapes optimized for professional applications to provide a complete range of professional recording media solutions.
The HDV format has been announced as a next-generation, high-definition camcorder format for the professional market. The establishment of the HDV format was jointly announced by Sony Corporation, Canon Inc., Sharp Corporation and Victor Company of Japan, Limited (JVC) in September 2003. HDV has been supported by Adobe Systems Incorporated, Apple Computer, Avid Technology Inc., Canopus Co., Ltd., Miranda Technology Inc., Pinnacle Systems Inc., Sobey Digital Technology Co., Ltd., Sony Pictures Digital, Inc. and Ulead Systems Inc, and 12 other leading technology companies.
Sony's HDW-730S HDCAM camcorder is ideal for videographers looking to migrate to high-definition, and the new model's array of features are designed to make it the HD camcorder of choice for program producers.
The HDW-730S is a three-CCD camcorder with 1,000 TV lines of horizontal resolution, a signal-to-noise ratio of 54 dB, and a smear level of -125 dB. The camcorder's minimum illumination of 0.31 lux (and 0.0003 lux when using the optional HKDW-705 Slow Shutter board) is a significant benefit for producers capturing footage in often less-than-ideal lighting conditions, the manufacturer describes.
The camcorder's optional picture cache recording feature also reduces the risk of missed scenes, and allows line-lapse recording. Significant production and imaging flexibility can be realized when the HDW-730S is combined with this option board.
Other benefits for ENG work include 60i/50i switchable operation, NTSC/PAL compatibility with an SDI output and assignable switches.
For production applications, the HDW-730S offers an expanded palette of image effects, such as after-image effect when using the slow shutter function. The interval recording feature is ideal for capturing nature footage and the camcorder's Memory Stick slot allows for easy storage and transfer of files.
The HDW-730S will be available at a suggested list price of $48,000.
