WEVA NEWS MINUTE: RED's Upcoming 'Scarlet' 3K Ultra-HD Cam
April 23, 2008
Las Vegas, NV - RED was the rage at NAB 2008, creating long lines of attendees eager to catch a glimpse of compact digital camcorder technology with the quality of 35mm film. Along with RED ONE, the 4K resolution camera that began shipping last year, the RED Digital Cinema Camera Company displayed model designs of Scarlet, a 3K palm-size unit (pictured), and "Epic" a 5K camera, both projected for release next year.
Last week on the NAB show floor, WEVA NEWS MINUTE producers Sue Lawson and Bruce Himmelblau interviewed RED Digital's Ted Schilowitz who contends Scarlet will be ready to transform wedding videos with its ultra hi-res technology for a fraction of the cost of RED ONE. How?

According to the company, the RED system's modular design and future-proof technology, "renders obsolence obsolete. The idea behind the RED camera system is simple. Design and build a high-performance digital cine camera with the quality of 35mm film and convenience of pure digital. RED delivers unmatched image quality with no recording system limitations."
Imaging is achieved through the qualities of RED’s Mysterium Sensor, a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor that boasts "greater than 66dB Dynamic Range thanks to its large 29 sq. micron pixels. And 12,065,000 pixels deliver resolution that can only be called Ultra High Definition," the company says.
While high-end HD camcorders may have 2.1M pixel sensors and record with 3:1:1 color sub-sampled video at up to 30fps, the RED crew says their Mysterium Sensor is a super 35mm cine-sized (24.4×13.7mm) sensor, which provides 4K (up to 30 fps), 3K (up to 60 fps), and 2K (up to 120 fps) capture, and all with wide dynamic range and color space in 12-bit native RAW. According to RED Digital, "At 4K, that’s more than 5 times the amount of information available every second and a vastly superior recording quality."
Specifications for the upcoming Scarlet 3K camera include:
• NEW 2/3" MYSTERIUM X SENSOR
• 1-120 FPS (180FPS BURST)
