Sony Shows New Wireless Microphones on Town Meeting Tour
February 17, 2003

New York, NY - Sony is showing new UHF wireless microphone systems combining professional sound with in-the-field flexibility and functionality. Products were unveiled at the first stop of the current WEVA Town Meeting Tour in New York City.

The new UWP wireless microphone series features rugged housings, internal antennas and transmitters with battery life lasting nearly six-hours, the manufacturer described. The portable UHF tuner was shown mounted on a microphone stand, as well as on a PD150 camcorder.

The UWP-S and UWP-X wireless microphone systems provide selectable RF output levels: 5mW output for simultaneous multi-channel operation and 30mW high power output for long distance transmission. The systems are powered by two LR-6 alkaline batteries (AA-size).

The featured UHF models include:

UWP-S1: Body-back transmitter with a lavaliere microphone system and a half rack diversity tuner, which features a compact and lightweight design that makes it well suited for live performance venues.

UWP-S2: A handheld wireless microphone with a half-rack size diversity tuner. It features an internal antenna and a metal case to provide durability.

UWP-X1: For larger multi-channel applications, the UWP-X1 package includes a body-pack transmitter, lavaliere microphone system and diversity tuner module. The unit is designed for simultaneous multi-channel operation with Sony's MB-806A multi-channel rack system.

UWP-X2: This package also includes a hand-held wireless microphone and diversity tuner module for use in larger, multi-channel applications. The transmitter has an internal antenna and comes in a rugged metal case. The tuner module offers simultaneous multi-channel operation with the MB-806A multi-channel rack system.

The UWP series UHF wireless microphone systems utilize three core technologies to supply stable transmission and reception:
• PLL Synthesized System: A stable carrier signal helps to prevent interference with other frequency channels, offering the option to select a preferred channel from multiple frequencies.
• Space Diversity Reception System: Achieves a stable reception through dual-antenna inputs/reception circuits that receive signals over two different paths and automatically selects the best RF signal for quality performance.
• Tone Squelch Circuitry: Recognizes a 32-kHz pilot-tone signal and outputs the audio signal only when this signal is received, which also helps prevent potential interference from other transmissions of wireless devices.

The UWP-S and the UWP-X UHF wireless microphone systems will be available in February, the company reports, starting at a suggested list price of $699 for each transmitter and receiver system.
