It Happened Last Week in LA - From the BlogDesk of WEVA's John Zale
December 10, 2007
Sarasota, FL - From the BlogDesk of John Zale – WEVA Director of Educational Development ([email protected]).
Along with Dan Argenas and Brooke Rudnick, I spent last week in Los Angeles, CA attending DV Expo West. Wedding & Event Videographers Association International (WEVA) had a booth at the trade show where we were able to connect with current WEVA members and greet new professionals who wanted to join the Association.
A number of new products stood out at the trade show. Grabbing the attention of wedding and event videographers was Sony’s PMW-EX1 XDCAM EX camcorder, a brand new full HD solid-state model. It’s one thing to read about a product, another to see it in person and go "hands-on."
As I watched a rep explain the EX1 features, gathered around the Sony booth were longtime WEVA members Pat Harris and Jay Stein. Both agreed this camera will have a major impact on our industry. The EX1 is one of several new camcorders scheduled to be featured in the special WEVA HD Camcorder Shoot-Out next month during WEVA’s Wide World of Weddings & Events at PMA 08 - click here for details or go to: www.weva.com/convention. The WEVA HD Shoot-Out will be held during Trade Show hours at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Full WEVA Convention registration, and Trade Show registration, are available.
Dan Argenas, WEVA’s Director of Association Communications ([email protected] pictured second from left) presented a new seminar Wednesday morning on "GETTING PAID FOR YOUR CONTENT AS THE DEMAND FOR DIGITAL VIDEO EXPLODES." New money-making opportunities are increasing in this area for WEVA members, as evidenced by WEVA’s news announcement last week of the new ImageSpan/TAKKLE partnership for bringing top high school sports events online, and the new ImageSpan/Adobe unveiling of LicenseStream.
We also had a number of on-site discussions with WEVA members about adding new services and new after-sale products that will increase a wedding and event videographer’s bottom-line profits.
One of those discussions was with Fresno, California’s Doug Crutchfield (a.k a. WEVA’s all-time Raffle Winning Record-Holder). A wedding and event video veteran, Doug is already thinking about increasing his digital imaging (and photo coverage) services for 2008 and said he plans to attend the WEVA convention at PMA 08 next month to help him determine and chart new profit centers for his growing videography business.
A large number of WEVA Latino members stopped by the booth throughout the show, including Rolando Hernandez, Cesar Gonzalez, and Oscar Dominguez (pictured far left) from PUNTO Magazine. We chatted about new industry developments and the success of last month’s West Coast Latino Videography & Digital Imaging Show where WEVA was a sponsor.
I was up at sunrise Tuesday to meet with WEVA members Jeff Wright, Steve Moses, and Daniel Boswell as we contemplated the future of our industry while chasing a little white ball around for 18 holes. My apologies to my partner Steve, as the rust in my game cost him lunch. I learned that 2 of 3 of these California videographers have the EX1 on order to either compliment or replace their FX-1s. In between holes, Daniel said he’s now producing Instant-Edits at 95% of his weddings. I also witnessed him produce a 340-yard drive, which was outstanding (even if it was downwind).
Once again, southern California proved to be a great place to visit in December, and it was a real pleasure getting a chance to talk to so many WEVA members. I’m looking forward to seeing everybody when wedding and event videographers get together next month at the WEVA Convention in Las Vegas! - John Zale
