Sony Unveils Media Center PCs in Japan
April 13, 2006
Tokyo, Japan - Japanese news service, Digital World Tokyo, reported that Sony demonstrated a series of Vaio L desktop computers for sale in Japan. The PCs have integrated LCD screens and some models may be covered by the hinged keyboards.
With circuitry hidden behind the display, the new Sony Vaio L computers resemble a home TV receiver. The LB series has the hinged keyboard, with hinges on the bottom of the monitor, that flips up to cover the 15.4-inch display.
The LA series includes a wireless keyboard and a 19-inch screen. They can record television programs and have 512MB of memory Buyers may choose between different configurations: one with an Intel Core Duo T2300 processor and a 200 GB hard drive, one with an Intel Celeron M 420 processor with a 200 GB drive, and a basic model with the Intel Celeron M 420 processor, an 80 GB drive, but without TV recording capability.
The Intel Core Duo LA machine will cost around ¥250,000 ($2,110), the Celeron M-based LA machine will cost ¥220,000 and the LB machine will cost ¥180,000. All three will be available in Japan from Apr. 22. Sale of the machines overseas is still under consideration, said Sony.
None of the PCs in this series have Blu-ray Disc drives. At Germany's CeBit show last month, Sony announced their plans to deliver both desktop and laptop PCs with Blu-ray Drives.
