Sony Plans Huge Hi-Def Marketing Program This Year

New York, NY - Reuters News Service recently reported on an interview they had with Michael Fasulo, chief marketing officer at Sony Electronics. Fasulo said that their US unit will be dramatically increasing spending to promote sales of high-definition electronics such as televisions, camcorders and Blu-ray disc players.
Fasulo added that sales of high definition productions are growing by double digit percentages each year. With Blu-ray disc players on the horizon and reduced prices for HDTVs, Fasulo said that Sony sees an opportunity this year to promote HD products.
According to Reuters, Sony spends about $100 million annually on advertising. Fasulo stated that Sony plans to spend hundreds of million of dollars more on marketing in the coming year.
"We are making a huge investment. It is the largest in history that I can recall," Fasulo said. "We are serious and aggressive about this being the year for Sony and HD." He added that digital camcorders, still cameras and Blu-ray disc players will comprise 75 percent of the company's marketing endeavor.
With Toshiba's planned launch of HD DVD next month, Sony's plans for Blu-ray disc this summer and several major movies being released in hi-def formats, consumers should be ready to purchase HDTV sets. According to the Consumer Electronics Association, HDTVs will outsell standard definition television receivers this year. The CEA predicted that nearly 16 million HDTVs would be sold.
