LG Electronics to Support Both Blu-ray and HD DVD
March 08, 2006
Hanover, Germany - At Hanover, Germany's CeBIT electronics show, Reuters News Service reported that LG Electronics, one of the largest optical drive manufacuters, will support HD DVD as well as Blu-ray.
Prior to this announcement, LG intended to manufacture only Blu-ray drives. This comes only a month after Hewlett Packard, the world's second largest PC maker, announced their plans to support both formats.
LG's European division president, James Kim, said the company expects to announce the first HD DVD and Blu-ray products later this year. The drive will work with PC computers, and pricing has not been announced.
The HD DVD format has been championed by Toshiba, with other manufacturers and movie studios joining the camp. Toshiba plans to introduce the first HD DVD players later this month, and at the CeBIT show, demonstrated a new laptop computer with an HD DVD drive.
WEVA Association News reported last week that a new copy protection system may delay the release of HD DVD. The WEVA report also noted a possible delay in the competing Blu-ray format because of the delay in releasing Sony's Blu-ray disc equipped Playstation 3. Read that news at:
