Samsung Hints at Unified HD DVD--Blu-ray Player
September 07, 2005
Frankfurt, Germany - Financial Times Deutchland reported that Samsung may develop a unified HD DVD--Blu-ray machine sometime next year. According to the report, Samsung's head of consumer electronics, Choi Gee-sung said "We would welcome a unified standard, but if this doesn't come, which looks likely, we'll bring a unified solution to market,"
Gee-sung acknowledged that the process would not be simple but that consumers could expect to see a machine from Samsung in the coming year. Gee-sung was at IFA, Germany's consumer electronics show. He said that without a unified format "consumers would be too confused."
WEVA reported recently that Toshiba is delaying the release of HD DVD and that the Blu-ray and HD DVD camps had stopped talks about cooperating on a unified format.
Manufacturers and movie studios have been announcing their support of one format over the other, and Samsung has backed Blu-ray.
