Toshiba May Delay HD DVD
September 02, 2005
Tokyo, JP - Reuters Japan reported that Toshiba may not have HD DVD players and recorders available this Christmas, as they had previously announced.
The report said that Toshiba was still committed to the HD DVD format and that their reason for the delay "is to maximize potential demand for the new products."
No time frame in 2006 was announced. Sony had previously stated that PlayStation 3, scheduled for a spring 2006 rollout would be equipped with a Blu-ray high definition DVD player. The question becomes, "which high definition DVD format will come first to market?"
Panasonic has developed Blu-ray manufacturing plants and some Hollywood studios have announced their intention to release movies in the Blu-ray format. However, other studios have rallied behind the HD DVD camp as does NEC and Sanyo Electric.
The two camps almost worked together to develop a unified high definition DVD format. That effort was undertaken to avoid a format war similar to the VHS-Betamax rivalry in the 80s. The manufacturers seemed to agree that having two competing formats would confuse consumers and might delay their purchase of high definition DVD equipment.
