Hollywood Studios Split Between Blu-ray & HD DVD
July 12, 2005
Hollywood, CA - The New York Times yesterday reported that Hollywood studios are divided between HD DVD and Blu-ray. According to the report, Universal Studios, Warner Home Video and Paramount plan to offer 89 movies this year in the HD-DVD format developed by Toshiba and NEC. Sony and Disney studios say they will release movies in the Blu-ray format.
Fox, MGM, Lions Gate and others have not yet announced which format they will back. Consumers will be able to purchase HD DVD players this Christmas, and Sony states that their Playstation 3, which will be sold next spring, will be equiped with Blu-ray technology.
The report added that Sony, Panasonic and other manufacturers already are selling Blu-ray recorders and re-writable discs in Japan. However, the read-only Blu-ray discs that will be used for movies are still being tested.
As previously reported in WEVA Industry News, Panasonic developed a Blu-ray disc production facility in Torrance, CA, and the company has ramped up production of read-only discs.
