Blu Ray--HD-DVD Unified Format Talks
June 22, 2005
Tokyo, JP - Japan news service Nikkei reported yesterday that Sony and Toshiba may resume talks about a unified high definition DVD format, after new executives at both companies take over later this month.
Last week Nikkei reported that Sony Consumer Electronics President Ken Kutaragi said it was "game over" for talks, following Toshiba's refusal to accept Blu-ray as the basis for a unified disc format.
Toshiba has stated they will release DVD players in the HD-DVD format by year's end, while Sony plans to utilize the Blu-ray format for Playstation 3 due to be released next spring. Blu-ray can store up to 50GB versus HD-DVD's 30GB capacity.
Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Howard Stringer will become group CEO this week, while Atsutoshi Nishida will be Toshiba's CEO on June 24.
The news service reported that Sony had hoped for a unified format to avoid losing out as they did in the Betamax-VHS wars of the past.
