Sanyo May Support Unified Hi Def DVD Format
June 16, 2005
Tokyo, JP - Japanese news service Kyodo reported that consumer electronics maker Sanyo plans to manufacture a key component for high-definition disc players that reads the discs for both Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats. This follows a report in WEVA Industry News on May 29 about Sony and Toshiba in talks about a possible unified high-definition format.
The news agency said that Sanyo plans to release an HD-DVD player by the end of this year. However, Sanyo is also working with the Blu-ray camp of high definition discs. Sony has taken the lead with Blu-ray and announced plans for next spring's Playstation 3 to be equipped with a Blu-ray disc player. Toshiba previously said they would have HD-DVD players on store shelves by the end of this year and recently announced that they have developed technology for recordable HD-DVDs with 15GB storage capacity. The company said these discs would accompany Toshiba HD-DVD recorders said to be available next spring.
HD-DVD read-only discs have a 30 GB capacity, and Blu-ray's capacity is 50GB. Manufacturers supporting the HD-DVD format reportedly have stated that their format is less expensive to produce because the production method is similar to current standard definition DVDs.
