HP Releases LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling System
May 03, 2005
Palo Alto, CA - Hewlett Packard released the LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling system that burns a label directly onto the face of specially-coated disc media.
The system uses the same laser that burns data on discs, to create iridescent labeling on the opposite side. HP offers LightScribe enabled DVD and CD media with a special laser-sensitive coating. Other manufacturers said to be offering LightScribe media include Imation, Memorex, Philips and TDK.
LightScribe technology was developed and patented by HP and is currently being licensed by optical industry leaders in drive and media manufacturing and by media and software brands.
The LightScribe technology uses the optical drive's existing laser to deliver precisely controlled light energy to the disc through an innovative circular writing system.
When energy focuses on the disc, a visible chemical change occurs in the dye coating. The result is a high-resolution grayscale reproduction of artwork, text or photos. Users burn the data side of the disc as normal, and then flip the disc over to burn the iridescent label.
