MPEG Industry Forum Announces MPEG-A
May 02, 2005
- The MPEG Industry Forum announced MPEG-A, a new standard, said to be an easier path for leveraging multimedia technologies. MPEG-A and MAF (Multimedia Application Formats) are intended to re-emphasize industrial relevance of standards and to be driven by industry needs for more complete technical specifications, which are completed in a short period of time.
Their website offers a white paper for free download that explains MPEG-A and MAF as well as comparisons with MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG -7 and MPEG-21. It has become increasingly difficult for industry to master all the technical options and evaluate all their relative benefits.
MPEG-A supports a fast track to standardization by selecting readily tested and verified tools taken from the MPEG body of standards and combining them to form an MAF.
