Video Features in New Mac OS X Tiger for Desktop, Server
April 14, 2005

Cupertino, CA - Apple's new Mac OS X desktop version 10.4 Tiger, and Tiger Server, will go on sale Friday, April 29, the company has announced.

Tiger has more than 200 new features, among them audio, video and digital media applications:

QuickTime 7, the latest version of Apple's standards-based media player, with H.264 support, live video resizing, zero-configuration streaming and extensive surround sound;

iChat, with the new H.264 video codec for dramatically better picture quality over the same Internet bandwidth. Users can now create audio conferences with up to 10 people and video conferences with up to four people in a 3D virtual conference room, just as if they were all seated together at a table*.

Spotlight is Apple's new way for users to find virtually anything stored on their Mac, searching the contents inside documents and information about those documents, or metadata, to find just about anything - emails, contacts, appointments, images, PDFs, and almost any type of document, including Microsoft Office documents. It then automatically organizes and instantly displays the results.

A new Automator workflow application lets users easily automate repetitive tasks without complex programming.

A full featured RSS reader is built in to provide instant access to the most current information from leading news organizations, community web sites and even personal weblogs (blogs) directly from the browser. Multiple RSS feeds can be merged into one easy-to-read interface to create a user's own personal news clipping service.

New core technologies and tools in Tiger make it easy for developers to create the next generation of innovative applications, including: native 64-bit application support to take advantage of the increased performance unleashed when accessing massive amounts of memory, while still running side-by-side with existing 32-bit applications; Core Image and Core Video to provide the foundation for new image and video processing applications. the manufacturer describes.

Tiger requires a minimum of 256MB of memory and is designed to run on any Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G5, G4, or G3 processor and built-in FireWire.

The next major release of Apple's award-winning, UNIX-based server operating system, Tiger Server integrates over 100 leading open source projects and standards-based software applications with easy-to-use management tools that make it easy to deploy for Mac, Windows and Linux clients. Tiger Server has over 200 new features including native support for 64-bit applications, ideal for high performance computing; iChat Server to deploy secure instant messaging
within an organization; Weblog Server that makes it simple to publish and share weblogs (blogs); and Xgrid to make it easy to turn a group of Macs into a virtual supercomputer.

Tiger Server brings the power of 64-bit computing to mainstream servers. For the first time, applications can unleash 64-bit performance when accessing massive amounts of memory through 64-bit addressing and also undertake high
precision math calculations with 64-bit optimized math libraries, at the same time as running 32-bit applications. Combined with Apple's Power Mac G5 or Xserve G5, Tiger Server offers an affordable, easy-to-manage solution
for the most demanding high performance scientific, technical and creative computing needs.
