Sony Patent Covers Projecting Video Into Brain
April 07, 2005
Washington, DC - Sony Corp. has been granted a patent for beaming sensory information directly into the brain.
The announcement already has placed in some observer's minds images ranging from Matrix-inspired mind control techniques, to enhanced smell, taste, and touch for sensory-disadvantaged patients, to dynamic video or videogame content delivery.
But a Sony Electronics spokeswoman is quoted by industry sources as saying that the patent is based on inspiration, and that no experiments have been conducted.
United States Patent 6,729,337, granted to Sony researcher Thomas Dawson, describes a technique for aiming ultrasonic pulses at specific areas of the brain to induce "sensory experiences" such as smells, sounds and images.
The patent, filed in January 2003 and granted last year, describes "a non-invasive system and process for projecting sensory data onto the human neural cortex" that includes "a primary transducer array and a secondary transducer array."
Observers and industry commentators are saying the idea has a strong foundation, and merit for future applications.
