EFF Unveils Guide to Build Home-made PVR
March 11, 2005
San Francisco, CA - The Electronic Frontier Foundation has released a guide to assembling a personal video recorder (PVR) with KnoppMyth r5a10 and pcHDTV.
The organization says it is responding to recent legislation and regulation in the United States that will ban the manufacture of DTV-receiving hardware after July 1, 2005.
EFF is challenging these regulations in court, saying the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted a rule requiring future digital television (DTV) tuners to include "content protection" (aka DRM) technologies. Starting next year, all makers of HDTV receivers must build their devices to watch for a broadcast "flag" embedded in programs by copyright holders.
EFF reports that "creating your own HDTV PVR with free/open source software is a fun and rewarding experience", noting that existing equipment will continue to work, and be lawful to possess and operate, but that restrictions could affect future equipment features and functions.
EFF is a donor-supported membership organization working to protect our fundamental rights regardless of technology; to educate the press, policymakers and the general public about civil liberties issues related to technology; and to act as a defender of those liberties.
