New JPEG Compression Tool Unveiled
January 24, 2005
Watsonville, CA - Allume Systems, Inc., the company that makes Stuffit archiving and compression software, will deliver a new compression algorithm for the lossless compression of JPEG files.
StuffIt Deluxe version 9.0 for Windows will introduce in Q1 of this year the new patent pending compression technology, able to reduce file sizes by as much as 30%, the company announced.
The abilty to compress JPEG images as StuffIt X (.sitx) archive files includes a number of processes that monitor files as they are archived; when particular file types are detected they are directed to compression methods specifically designed to compress that type of data. In a technology white paper, the company says that when users add JPEG images to StuffIt X archives, those images will be detected and automatically compressed with the new image compression algorithm. StuffIt removes the existing lossless compression component and replaces it in a lossless process; not only does the image suffer no reduction in quality, the resulting file is byte for byte identical to the original file.
In addition to the compression of JPEG images, support for the compression of a comprehensive array of image formats will be provided in StuffIt products
released over the course of 2005 and beyond. These releases include additional patent pending technology aimed at the compression of both 24bit images (such as pictures in TIFF and PNG format) and indexed images (such as pictures in GIF format).
