KONA 2 Card Captures Red Sox Victory!
October 28, 2004

Boston. MA - KONA 2 technology from AJA and powerful new QuickTime drivers from Apple Computer added to the excitement as millions of television viewers watched the Boston Red Sox dispel 86 years of baseball heartbreak during the recent Division Playoffs, Championship Series, and the World Series Championship games, shown on Fox TV.

Beginning with the MLB Division Series, on through the amazing American League Championship Series, and then the now-historic World Series, Fox TV utilized AJA's KONA 2 720p DVCPRO HD workflow on an Apple G5 with Final Cut Pro HD for on-screen bumpers, wrap-arounds and highlight packages, the manufacturer reports.

High quality 720 p HD-SDI video and AES audio was natively captured directly from the production trucks through a router straight into the Panasonic 720p DVCPRO HD codec in their Final Cut Pro system.
Output was sent through the KONA card back to the router; it was then recorded for instant replay or sent directly to the switcher for on-air use. The opening segments and teasers are pre-recorded, sent to an EVS Digital Disk Recorder (DDR) for instant replay, then the editor is freed up to work on actual game coverage.

After the success of this new system for the Division Playoffs and American League games, Fox implemented a second Apple G5 system with FCP and the KONA 2 technology, for post-production editing of the pre-game shows for the World Series games. This enables them to have in-game coverage in a completely nonlinear environment so they won't have to lay it back to tape.

[This all allowed Red Sox Nation to watch and enjoy as baseball history was made again and again as their team cast off the so-called Curse of the Bambino to take the Championship.
Down three games to none in the ALCS, behind in the bottom of the ninth, the Red Sox became the first team in major league history to win a post-season series after trailing so badly.
In an improbable and unprecedented comeback, the Red Sox won the next four games from the New York Yankees, then went on to sweep the table and beat the season's best team in baseball (the St Louis Cardinals, and their 105 win season) four games to none!
In case you are thinking your eyes deceive you, fret no longer. Yes, the Red Sox won! Thanx to digital technology, the great victory was recorded, was replayed and will be archived for future generations. It's true, it's true, it finally true!
Hey, what can I say? I was born in Boston, and I have been waiting a little while for this to happen, OK? Apologies to AJA for co-opting most of its press release. The part about the KONA card and Fox TV is perfectly true. The part about the Red Sox is perfectly, true, too - if unbelievable!]
