Apple Updates G4 iBook, G5 Power Mac, Xserve Systems

Cupertino, CA - Apple has unveiled new products in its notebook, desktop and server line-up, including a new iBook G4 featuring built-in AirPort Extreme 54 Mbps 802.11g wireless networking; a 1.8 GHz single processor 64-bit Power Mac G5 desktop; and a Xserve RAID storage system delivering 5.6 terabytes (TB) of storage capacity.
Encased in a sleek, durable polycarbonate plastic enclosure, the new 12- and 14-inch iBooks offer improved performance with either a 1.2 GHz
or 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 processor, the company describes. Providing up to six hours of battery life, the iBook lineup offers AirPort Extreme 54 Mbps 802.11g wireless networking in every model and an optional internal Bluetooth module for wirelessly connecting peripherals such as the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple Wireless Mouse. All iBook G4 models also offer a full complement of I/O ports including FireWire 400, USB 2.0, a built-in 56K v.92 modem and Ethernet (10/100BASE-T) for connectivity to a wide range of peripherals such as speakers, MIDI keyboards and iPod. Providing world class graphics capabilities, each iBook G4 offers ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics with 32MB of dedicated DDR memory and AGP 4X support for gaming and watching DVDs, as well as VGA video out for easy mirroring to projection systems and external displays. The new iBook G4 also includes either a slot-load SuperDrive, for burning both DVDs and CDs, or a slot-load combo drive capable of burning and playing CDs and watching DVDs.
Complementing the existing lineup of dual 2.5 GHz, dual 2.0 GHz and dual 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 models, the new 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 provides customers with a powerful and expandable tower configuration at an affordable price. The new 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 features 6.4GB per second of fast memory bandwidth, up to 4GB of total main memory, three PCI expansion slots, up to 500GB of internal Serial ATA mass storage and AGP 8X Pro graphics capabilities, all within a stunning professional aluminum enclosure featuring innovative computer-controlled cooling for quiet operation. The 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 comes with the NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 Ultra graphics card with dual display support and delivers industry-leading connectivity and high-performance I/O with Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire 800, two FireWire 400 ports, three USB 2.0 ports, optical digital audio input and output, analog audio input and output and a headphone jack.
The unique architecture of Xserve RAID delivers massive storage density and incredible performance. Fourteen independent 400GB Ultra ATA drive
channels provide up to 5.6TB of storage capacity with pricing as low as $2.32(USD) per gigabyte while the dual independent RAID controllers with
512MB cache per controller offer sustained throughput of over 380MBps‹high enough to support two streams of uncompressed 10-bit HD video editing using protected RAID level 5.
