Sanyo Opts for HD-DVD
September 02, 2004
Osaka, JP - Sanyo Electric is developing technology for a next-generation DVD format, called HD-DVD, along with Toshiba Corp. and NEC Corp, industry reports indicate.
The companies plan to launch HD DVD players in Japan next year, recorders in 2006, and then expand into North America.
The addition of Sanyo to the Toshiba-NEC team will heat up the battle with a group led by Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. to create
a standard next-generation DVD format, according to industrial analysts.
Sanyo opted for HD-DVDs over Blu-ray Disc format because of technological compatibility with current DVDs. HD-DVD is capable of recording 30 gigabytes of data on a dual layer disc.
The thirteen-company Blu-ray group, led by Sony and Matsushita, is developing the other format, using a blue-violet laser and discs capable of recording 50 gigabytes of data.
Sanyo joined with Toshiba and NEC in fall 2003 for technical studies of HD DVD-R, presented in May 2004 to the DVD forum. In September, Sanyo, Toshiba and NEC expect this HD DVD-R technology to become version 0.9. The Blu-ray format was introduced by the disc founder organization in February 2002, with licensing beginning the following year.
