Sony Wireless Camera System for Live Event Acquisition
June 16, 2004

Park Ridge, NJ - A new wireless camera system from Sony provides cable-free mobility for live events or ENG production.

The system comprises two wireless camera transmitters (WLL-CA55 and WLL-CA50) that dock onto the back of compatible Sony cameras or camcorders, and a wireless camera receiver (WLL-RX55) equipped with a dual tuner, diversity switcher and MPEG-2 decoder so that the signal with the fewest errors of the two is selected.

The two transmitters both convert acquisition audio/video signals into MPEG-2 bit-streams for transmission over the 2.4 GHz frequency band, allowing a wireless camera system to be set-up easily without need for a license, the manufacturer describes.

In addition to offering real-time MPEG-2 broadcast picture quality and MPEG-1 Layer I/II 48 kHz audio, the new wireless system is compatible with either 525/60 or 625/50 video formats.

The WLL-CA55 and WLL-CA50 transmitters minimize reception interruptions through the use of Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (COFDM) technology, which splits a signal into multiple RF channels and sends each sub-signal over a separate sub-carrier frequency. This technology, when combined with the WLL-RX55 receiver's Error Correction Coding (ECC), allows the system to recover an entire signal in nearly any type of environment.

The new wireless camera system uses three modes of time interleaving (fast, run and walk) for the most error-free signal.
Other key features include:
Flexible channel selection: menu-operated selection of up to six channels, with frequency fine-tuning adjustable in 1 MHz steps.

Secure encryption key: helps prevent other wireless broadcast systems from receiving signals.

User-friendly interface: all settings are menu-driven, with pre-set operating modes available. LCD screens display status and alarm messages.

Low power consumption: WLL-CA55 consumes 15 watts of power and more than two hours of continuous operation are possible when combined with the BVP-E10 camera series.

The WLL-CA50's power consumption is nine watts.

Announced at NAB, the wireless system is now available. No pricing information was announced.
