Serious Magic Unveils New DV Rack Software
April 20, 2004
Las Vegas, NV - Serious Magic unveiled DV Rack at NAB, a software suite of professional video monitoring, evaluation and digital video recording tools for laptop or desktop PCs connected to a DV camera.
DV Rack’s nine software components effectively replace thousands of dollars worth of monitoring and evaluation equipment typically found in a production truck with a fully automated, integrated and entirely native DV solution, the manufacturer describes.
DV Rack includes a professional monitor, digital video recorder, vectorscope, waveform monitor, audio spectrum analyzer, video analyzer, digital still frame grabber, shot timer and an automated quality monitoring tool, which evaluates every frame of video and audio for you while you shoot and alerts you of potential problems.
With DV Rack, producers can interactively scrub to any point in the video clips right after they are recorded, then zoom in, underscan the image, check audio levels, adds notes, check brightness and saturation and much more --all before going back to the edit suite.
The DV Rack software includes the following components:
Digital Video Recorder (DVR) – A breakthrough in DV recording technology, DV Rack provides higher reliability than tape and allows users to instantly jump to any part of a clip and interactively scrub through it. It records and stops w hen the camera does and also has an automatic variable duration recording buffer. Unlike other tapeless acquisition devices, DV Rack allows producers to see the shots to ensure they were recorded.
Professional Field Monitor – Unlike analog monitors, DV Rack accepts direct DV input, displaying the image exactly as it will be recorded. In addition to the typical features found in a broadcast monitor, DV Rack introduces video evaluation tools like freeze, zoom, dual zebra patterns and split mode.
DV Waveform Monitor and Vectorscope – DV Rack feature industry-standard monitoring functions as well as direct DV signal input for monitoring the actual post-compression signal as it will be recorded.
Automated Quality Monitor – DV Rack evaluates every video and audio frame and marks the location of potential problems on the DVR display. This allows for one-click review and assessment of the problem area.
Audio Spectrum Analyzer – Providing signal information beyond what can be heard with headphones, DV Rack offers a precise visual representation that enables adjustments to microphone placement and orientation to be made during shooting for improved audio quality.
Video Analyzer - DV Rack’s Spectra 60 video monitoring and evaluation tool, monitors on a pixel by pixel basis to provide precise readouts in any of five color spaces including RGB, HSV and CMYK.
DV Grabber – DV Rack captures and saves high resolution video stills direct from live DV video or DVR 1000 clips. Frames can be saved in standard JPG, BMP or PNG formats or to the Windows clipboard.
Shot Clock Timer/Clock Module – DV Rack’s stopwatch/event timer, counts in video frames as well as providing a high visibility time-of-day production clock that can be automatically calibrated to the atomic clock at the U.S. Naval Observatory when connected to the Internet.
DV Rack is expected to be available in Summer 2004. The product will be available from Serious Magic’s online store and many professional video resellers.
