New JVC Pro HDV Camcorder
April 19, 2004
Las Vegas, NV - JVC Professional Products Company revealed a prototype three-chip, high-definition/standard-definition (HD/SD) switchable electronic newsgathering/electronic field production (ENG/EFP) style camcorder at NAB.
It is the industry’s first professional-grade three-chip camcorder targeted at mainstream production and ENG users, the company describes. It uses three 2/3-inch CMOS imagers, each with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The new chips produce higher image quality with far lower power consumption than conventional CCDs, and are easily adaptable to various scanning rates including 720P and 1080i.
The camera will include a built-in highly efficient MPEG-2 encoder capable of providing extremely high-quality, bandwidth-efficient recordings of the native HD images. While JVC did not divulge the details of the encoder, it did say the camera will be capable of both SD and HD recording, including HD at 24 frames progressive. JVC’s HD camcorder will utilize the new HDV recording format capable of HD recording continuously up to 276 minutes on full size DV media, or up to 60 minutes on mini-DV media.
In addition, JVC is developing hard-drive and solid-state recording modules. The productivity gains realized with the current DR-DV5000U standard definition (SD) disk recording module will be even further appreciated when HD recordings are made in the native formats of popular non-linear editing (NLE) systems.
