Sony Packs Live Event Gear Into Carry-On Suitcase
April 18, 2004

Las Vegas, NV - Sony Electronics is introducing at NAB a portable "all-in-one" studio for live content creation that's roughly the size of a laptop carrying case.

The new Anycast Station content creation system combines a six-input video switcher, a six-channel audio mixer, a special effects generator, a preview and program video monitor, a Pan/Tilt/Zoom remote control for Sony VISCA-interface robotic cameras, an RGB output for displaying content from a PC or projector and an encoder and server to handle webcasting and streaming.

In addition to this multi-function capability, the Anycast Station can take in media of varying resolutions and formats, including live video feeds, pre-recorded tapes, PowerPoint presentations, DVDs, and still images. These sources can be mixed into a presentation without the need for an external scaler.

The Anycast Station is designed for applications such as live event programming and staging, presentations and conferencing, on-site product promotions or display advertising, distance learning and house-of-worship production.

Also built-in is multi-camera HDD recording. This feature allows users to record and store all feeds as an AVI stream, which can easily be read by most nonlinear editing systems, for repackaging and reuse.

A newly introduced wireless camera system comprises two wireless camera transmitters (WLL-CA55 and WLL-CA50) that dock onto the back of compatible Sony cameras or camcorders, and a wireless camera receiver (WLL-RX55) equipped with a dual tuner, diversity switcher and MPEG-2 decoder so that the signal with the fewest errors of the two is selected.

The two transmitters both convert acquisition audio/video signals into MPEG-2 bit-streams for transmission over the 2.4 GHz frequency band, allowing a wireless camera system to be set-up easily without need for a license.

In addition to offering real-time MPEG-2 broadcast picture quality and MPEG-1 Layer I/II 48 kHz audio, the new wireless system is compatible with either 525/60 or 625/50 video formats.

The various modules of an Anycast Station configuration include:
AWS-G500 Sony Live Content Producer
BZAW-500 Sony Live Content Producer Software
BKAW-550 Sony PC Image Interface Module (two PC RGB input capability)
BKAW-560 Sony Stream Interface Module (two Stream on Ethernet interface capability)
BKAW-570 Sony DV Interface Module (two DV/Composite /S-Video input capability)
