Sony Announces XDCAM Disc Ssystem And Avid Nonlinear Interoperability
February 11, 2004

Park Ridge, NJ - Sony Electronics has announced that content captured on its XDCAM Professional Disc system will be compatible with Avid Technology, Inc.'s native MPEG IMX (30/40/50 Mbps) and DVCAM nonlinear editing systems, including Avid's NewsCutter and Media Composer.

This seamless interoperability will allow a wider range of customers to fully realize the significant workflow benefits of the XDCAM system, the manufacturer reports, including its ability to store A/V data and metadata on high-capacity, random-access discs.

According to Avid, initial support for XDCAM format content will allow users to transfer high-resolution A/V clips across IP networks at high speed, greatly accelerating and streamlining the process of acquiring A/V material. Journalists and producers can begin assembling edit decision lists (EDL) almost immediately following acquisition.

Metadata compatibility will also be provided through Sony's and Avid's support of the Material eXchange Format (MXF) media file format.

Sony estimates it will ship more than 1,000 units of XDCAM system products worldwide by the end of March.

Sony and Avid will be demonstrating this system interoperability at NAB 2004 in Las Vegas this April.

The XDCAM system uses blue-laser optical media for increased data density. The rewritable 12cm media, with a storage capacity of 23.3 GB per disc, is encased in a protective cartridge, making the recording surface resistant to dust, shocks and scratches. The heat-resistant medium is designed to record, erase and re-record more than 1,000 times and to read the written data more than one million times, based on Sony's accelerated testing.
