Sony's New Camcorder Due This Month, Exclusive Reports Say
December 09, 2003

Sarasota, FL - Detailed product photography and comprehensive descriptions of the new and highly-anticipated Sony DSR-PD 170 camcorder, featured in the most recent edition of Wedding & Event Videography (WEV) Magazine and on the www.weva.com Industry News website were among the first available in North America.

"The news and information provided by WEVA International to its members, through the online news portal and in our trade journal, is highly-focused, very timely and it often 'scoops' the information carried by other outlets, due to the Associations's long-standing professional relationship with industry-leading manufacturers, distributors and vendors," said WEVA International Chairman Roy Chapman. "We will continue to provide the very latest news and most relevant information to our members, as represented by these exclusive reports."

Camera availability is expected this month.

Originally introduced as a PAL system product at IBC in September, an NTSC version of the new PD170 appeared on the Work Smart Sony Canada Tour in October, and the introduction was confirmed for WEV at the end of the month.

Manufacturer-providede information first appeared on the website November 13, and was quickly followed by the release of the magazine, which featured exclusive close-up photographs of the new camera and many of its unique new features, including the swivelling LCD screen, larger handle and hood with built-in lens cover.

As reported, the new DSR-PD170 builds on the popular predecessor model, the DSR-PD150, according to Bob Ott, VP, Sony Electronics Broadcast and Production Systems Division. "The DSR-PD170 distinguishes itself with the addition of several performance and ergonomic enhancements, many of which are the direct result of customer feedback," Ott described. "In designing the DSR-PD170, we listened to our customers and incorporated their input. The result is a reliable camcorder that continues to meet the professional videography needs of an even broader user base."

Some of the features include:
Minimum illumination improvement from 2 lux to 1 lux;
2.5-inch Hybrid LCD SwivelScreen; operates simultaneously with viewfinder
Additinal Iris control adjustment steps, doubled from 12 to 24;
Wide conversion lens (provided) and lens hood with built-in cover
Larger handle, viewfinder and eyecup;
Record/Start/Stop and Zoom controls on handle top; and
Audio quality (S/N ratio) improved by 6 dB.

The DSR-PD170 DVCAM camcorder is anticipated to be available in December. It will be offered in both NTSC and PAL versions at suggested retail prices of $3,940 and $4,750, respectively.
