Sony's DSR-PD170 Coming in December
October 30, 2003

Park Ridge, NJ - The Sony DSR-PD170 DVCAM camcorder is expected to be released in North America before year's end with a suggested list price of $3,940, according to Sony.

The 3-chip DSR-PD170, an upgrade to the PD150, supports acquisition in the DVCAM component digital format, as well as in DV, allowing up to 40 minutes recording on one Mini DVCAM tape, or 60 minutes on the same tape in the DV mode.

The camcorder's three 1/3-inch CCDs support two scanning modes: 480 progressive (for still) and interlaced (for video). The camera is 16 x 9/4 x 3 aspect ratio switchable; it is 4 x 3 native.

A 12X variable speed lens (48X digital zoom) offers SuperSteadyShot and Autofocus functions; a variable speed shutter is included. Custom AE, automatic and manual exposure settings are available. Manual settings and functions include shutter speeds, independent audio recording levels, white balance, AE shift, iris, zoom and focus.

Prime among the technical enhancements is the new camcorder's enhanced light sensitivity and minimum illumination specification - down to one lux from two, such as on the earlier DSR-PD150. Improvements to the imaging devices are credited.

Audio fidelity is also improved on the 170, with a S/N ratio (in manual mode) improved by 6dB over the 150.

The new camera has a larger handle and a larger viewfinder. The handle sports a zoom lever and record start/stop button. A hybrid LCD viewscreen has been enhanced for use in direct sunlight. Simultaneous operation of both the LCD panel and the viewfinder is possible, allowing improved camera angle and focus checking.

Increased adjustment over iris control is enabled with 24 separate steps (as opposed to 12).

A wide-angle conversion lens (the Sony VCL©HG0758 0.7 X) is included as standard, and it can be attached or removed without removing a new lens hood.
