Blackmagic Slashes Price for Uncompressed HD Editing
September 10, 2003
South Melbourne, Australia - Blackmagic Design has announced the Blackmagic DeckLink HD, a PCI based capture card for high-definition editing priced below $2000.
Blackmagic DeckLink HD is a 10 bit video PCI card that can do both standard definition SDI video, as well as full HDTV video formats, the manufacturer describes. DeckLink HD can instantly be switched between SDTV SMPTE-259M SDI video and HDTV SMPTE-292M SDI video for 1080i/1080p/720p video editing and design.
DeckLink HD features HD/SD-SDI video & audio input and output, as well as a Sony compatible RS422 serial deck control port. Also included is a second independent HD/SD-SDI output for video monitoring, and consumer digital audio SPDIF output for audio monitoring. Supporting 64 bit rendering in applications such as Adobe After Effects, DeckLink HD is one of the only products that allows full 10 bit capture and rendering.
When plugged into PCIX 100 MHz or PCIX 133 MHz slots, such as those found in the new Apple Power Macintosh G5 systems, DeckLink HD can immediately switch to full HDTV operation whenever the user requires. DeckLink HD can also be plugged into standard PCI 33 MHz slots for standard definition NTSC/PAL operation only.
Blackmagic DeckLink allows a complete connection to broadcast decks with only three standard off the shelf cables. No external equipment is required for system setup, and when using DeckLink JPEG, no fast disk array is required reducing costs even further. When uncompressed video is required, users can then upgrade to a disk array, and then select DeckLink HD to either uncompressed 10 bit or uncompressed 8 bit video modes.
Because JPEG is also supported in HDTV when running in the new Apple Power Macintosh G5 systems, users can do full resolution offline HDTV editing using a standard disk. Combined with the low cost of DeckLink HD, this allows low cost HDTV editing workstations to be setup for episodic television production, and feature film editing.
All video and audio channels are sent via a single BNC type video cable by taking advantage of embedded SDI audio. DeckLink HD eliminates the requirement for video sync generators as it provides a SDI reference video to the deck when capturing video.
Blackmagic DeckLink HD will be available in three to four weeks, from authorized Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide for US$1,995.
