16:9 Widescreen Add-ons for Mini DV
June 19, 2003
North Hollywood, CA - Century Optics is offering 1.33X Anamorphic Focusable Converter and Image correcting LCD Widescreen Magnifier for professional Mini DV camcorders.
The new 1.33X Anamorphic Focusable Converter facilitates the capture of 16:9 images with 4:3 cameras without sacrificing resolution or the cameras full zoom range, the manufacturer reports. The Anamorphic Focusable Converter squeezes the 16:9 image onto the high-resolution camera chip. Appearing vertically stretched in the viewfinder or on a 4:3 monitor, the resulting image automatically spreads out to fill the frame when fed to a 16:9 monitor or can be letterboxed in post-production.
The 1.33X Anamorphic Focusable Converter comes in Century's exclusive bayonet mount or 58mm thread for cameras like the Sony PD150, DCR-VX2000, DSR-250/200, Canon GL2/1, and Canon XL (pictured) series with the 16X manual lens.
Century's new front-mounted attachment reaches wider than the lens alone for 33% wider angle of view. In fact, with cameras employing integral 16:9 mode, adding the 1:33X Anamorphic results in a true 2.35 Cinemascope aspect ratio.
The innovative focusing design allows use of the camera lens full telephoto range. So the user can set up a telephoto shot, focus the add-on at extreme telephoto, and zoom to wide, without loosing focus.
The innovative LCD Widescreen Magnifier eliminates the problem of horizontal compression in the viewfinder when shooting with 16:9 adapters and converters. The lightweight unit simply slips on a cameras existing flip-out 2.5" diagonal LCD screen. Once in place, the LCD Widescreen Magnifier enlarges the image, protects from stray sunlight, and employs an anamorphic element to optically correct the 16:9 image that has been squeezed.
The Century 1.33X Anamorphic Focusable Converter has a list price of $1495. The LCD Widescreen Magnifier is priced around $225.
