Apple Announces QuickTime 6.3 with Support for 3GPP
June 04, 2003
Cupertino, CA - Apple has released QuickTime 6.3, with support for the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard for the creation, delivery and playback of rich multimedia content over wireless networks.
QuickTime 6.3 enables users to share high-quality video, audio and text on a new generation of wireless devices including cell phones and PDAs, and includes support for the 3GPP standard, including Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) audio, MPEG-4 and H.263 video, 3G Text (TX3G) and native .3gp file format support.
QuickTime 6.x also has the ability to play back MPEG-2 content via the QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component.
The new QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component provides QuickTime 6 users with the ability to import and play back MPEG-2 content, including both multiplexed (a.k.a. muxed, where the audio and video tracks are interleaved together into one track) and non-multiplexed (a.k.a. elementary) streams.
It is suited for professional and semi-professional content creators with projects such as:
Professional content approval and production - clients can view MPEG-2 streams on any Macintosh or PC.
Transcoding video content - MPEG-2 video content can be imported into QuickTime and exported to other formats such as MPEG-4, QuickTime Movie, or DV Stream, to name a few. The QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component allows the transcode of MPEG-2 video from both multiplexed and elementary video streams. By converting MPEG-2 video into other formats, it can be used in new forums, such as on the Web, on CD-ROM, or on DV tape.
The high-performance MPEG-4 video codec and the time-tested H.263 video codec both provide excellent results at low data rates. The modern AAC audio codec delivers exceptional quality music at a broad range of data rates while AMR provides narrowband audio encoding designed specifically for speech.
3G Text support in QuickTime 6.3 is time-based for accurate synchronization of titling and captioning with audio and video tracks. Additional features include automatic streaming transport detection for a more reliable streaming experience, improvements to DV audio and video synchronization and enhanced support for Apple’s Keynote, iMovie and iDVD applications.
QuickTime 6.3 is available immediately as a free download; the MPEG-2 component is available as an add-on for $19.99.
