Sony Shows New LCD Monitors for Video Production
June 04, 2003
Orlando, FL - Sony Electronics is showing its new LUMA series of LCD monitors, optimized for full motion video in broadcast and production environments. Five new models are being shown, including two multi-format 16:9 displays and three-rack mountable combination packages.
Sony is also adding to its P/T/Z camera line up with the introduction of its new EVI-D70.
The multi-format, widescreen monitors include the LMD-170WS and LMD-230WS models, 17- and 23-inch (viewable area, measured diagonally) displays, featuring a two-piece design. A separate multi-format engine houses the video processing, input connections, option slots, controls and power supply. Only the LCD panel and the tally light are mounted in the display cabinet, providing a lightweight design that allows greater installation flexibility.
These multi-format monitors accommodate a variety of standard and high-definition analog and digital signals, including 1080/60i, 720/60P, and 1080/24PsF, making them desirable for NLE suites and desktop production environments.
The multi-format engine comes equipped with composite, component and VGA inputs. Optional plug in cards can be slotted into the rear panel to accept SDI, HD-SDI or iLINK (IEEE1394) digital interface decoding. Values for contrast, chroma, phase and brightness can be adjusted by knobs on the front control panel. Operational functions, such as blue only, H/V delay, and safety area markers, provide necessary evaluation tools. DC operation and three-color tally are also part of the feature set.
The EVI-D70 pan/tilt/zoom unit combines a high quality 1/4 type EXview HAD CCD color camera with the flexibility of a remote pan/tilt/zoom operation, all in a compact easy-to-use package. This superior P/T/Z camera features a wide range pan/tilt with 18x optical zoom lens and is ceiling mountable (a first for Sony's popular EVI cameras).
The EVI-D70 is the direct successor to Sony's renowned EVI-D30 P/T/Z camera and joins the EVI-D100 as the ideal choice for remote shooting applications.
Key features include: high zoom ratio AF lens-18x optical + 12x digital zoom; excellent low-light sensitivity-minimum illumination less than one lux; wide range pan/tilt-340 degrees pan/120 degrees tilt; desktop or ceiling mount installation using E-Flip Function; fully controllable remotely via RS-232C or RS-422.
Sony is also offering its LCD in three rack-mountable combination packages for confidence monitoring. The LMD-440 package is a quad screen four-inch (viewable area, measured diagonally) panel in a 2 RU package. The LMD-530 is a triple screen five-point six-inch (viewable area, measured diagonally) panel in a 3 RU package. The LMD-720W is a dual seven-inch (viewable area, measured diagonally) widescreen in a 3 RU package. All models come equipped with analog composite inputs, with optional input adaptors available for SDI signals.
The high brightness and high contrast LCD panels perform well regardless of lighting conditions and can be easily tilted for optimal viewing. Designed to save space, power consumption and weight, these monitors are suitable for outside broadcast vehicles and VTR and control rooms, as well as studio and camera monitoring.
The double (LMD-720W), triple (LMD-530) and quad (LMD-440) monitors are expected to be available in June for suggested list prices of $2,299, $1,899 and $1,799, respectively. The LMD-170WS and LMD-230WS multi-format monitors have suggested list prices of $3,200 and $3,850 and are planned to ship in July.
