Sony Adds Studio-Configurable Camcorder to DVCAM Lineup
April 08, 2003
Las Vegas, NV - Sony is introducing a studio-configurable camcorder to its DVCAM professional video format product lineup.
The DSR-390 DVCAM camcorder, which incorporates a new CCD sensor to deliver superb picture quality, is designed for such applications as electronic news gathering (ENG), electronic field production (EFP) and studio configurations.
The new DSR-390 DVCAM uses ½-inch Power HAD IT (ICX-418/419) 4:3 CCD sensors and latest Digital Signal Processing (DSP) software. The three-CCD array boosts sensitivity and S/N ratio while lowering vertical smear ratio. The new CCDs allow sensitivity levels to increase from F11 to F13 (about 3dB), S/N ratio increase by 3dB to 65dB, and smear ratio drops 5dB to an astounding "FIT like" level of -115dB, the manufacturer reports.
The DSR-390 camcorder also offers the ability to simulate a cinema-type look to the video, and is the first in its format designed with a hard-disk video recorder in mind; by using the camcorder with Sony's DSR-DU1 hard-disk recorder through the camcorder's i.LINK (IEEE 1394) digital video port it can increase recording options.
Used in serial mode, the DSR-DU1 unit extends combined tape and HDD recording time to a full six hours. In parallel mode, this creates a backup recording that reduces the risk of missing an important shot.
The camcorder can be used in studio set-ups with an optional adapter that adds full duplex intercom capabilities and is remote controllable.
The DSR-390 camcorder is expected in May at a suggested list price of $9,870.
