Sony Shows Prototype Optical Camcorder
April 08, 2003
Las Vegas, NV - Sony Electronics is showing new production equipment based on optical disc recording at NAB.
Two camcorders, a field deck, studio deck and rack mount unit are on display.
Using 405 nm blue laser technology, and 12 cm discs that hold up to 23.3 GB, one new camcorder can record either DVCAM (25 Mbps data rate) video, or MPEG video, at 30, 40 or 50 Mbps. A disc holds up to 90 minutes of DVCAM video; less MPEG recording time is available, depending on selected bitrates.
A DVCAM-only optical disc camcorder is also anticipated. Sony had not yet assigned a model number or name to the units. Pricing is anticipated as $26,000 for the DVCAM/MPEG camcorder, and approximately $20,000 for the DVCAM only unit. Discs are anticipated at less than $20.
Few camera specifications are currently available, although the dual-mode camcorder is based on 2/3” inch CCD technology.
Optical disc recording allows the user to quickly delete bad scenes, and the disc will auto record to the next blank area on disc, avoiding accidental over-write. Using one of the new disc player decks, data can be transferred to an NLE system or other compatible device at data rates up to 72 Mbps – DVCAM can be transferred at 2.5 X real-time in this scenario, the manufacturer describes.
Initial shipments are anticipated in the fall.
