Jacksonville Meeting Spawns Local Associations
February 15, 2002

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL - The Sawgrass Marriott has hosted championship golf and tennis events, but nothing like the WEVA Town Meeting Tour had ever been to this part of northeast Florida. With Lance Gray, of Pixelpops Design in Dallas, presenting his final workshop on the 2002 Tour, videographers travelled from towns as distant as Avon, CT, Pittsburgh, PA, Burlington, VT, and Indianapolis, IN (site of an upcoming WEVA Town Meeting on March 14, 2002) to be in attendance at this beach resort just outside of Jacksonville, FL.

Local veteran videographer John Malinka impressed the audience with his presentation, featuring a video segment prepared especially for the father of the bride. Lance Gray's graphics-intensive workshop brought a large group of videographers out of the Florida sun, and into a warm learning environment.

Tampa area videographer Aaron Scott was invited to the podium during the Town Meeting to discuss progress being made in growing their local videographers association. A wave of enthusiasm seemed to cover the crowd, and volunteers emerged, offering to help start local associations in both the Jacksonville and Daytona Beach areas.

The Tour Sponsors' Reception and Exhibition developed long, but bearable lines of videographers eager to go hands-on with the newest DV, DVD, and NLE technology. In a WEVA Tour exclusive, the Jacksonville Town Meeting featured the first public viewing of Sony's new DSR-370 full-size 3-chip DVCAM camcorder (the Tour Sponsors' webpage will link you to further details and product photos at www.weva.com click on Town Meeting>Sony logo). Canopus, with its daytime seminar once again filling a ballroom, found lines of videographers waiting patiently to go hands-on with their nonlinear editing software.

Moore Digital reported seeing a mix of current and future customers, as DVD burns continue to increase in popularity. Panasonic, which has moved into producing digital gear exclusively, talked about how they have worked with WEVA's National Select Committee on Camcorder Development to produce their newer, smaller, and professionally-featured camcorders (the latest being the palm-sized AG-DVX100, MiniDV camcorder set for official unveiling later this year. See the WEVA Industry News page at www.weva.com for details).

The 4th Annual WEVA Town Meeting Tour is nearing its half-way point, with stop number five coming up on February 25 in the San Jose, CA area. Professional videographers from across the country have recognized the incredible value of the education offered during the WEVA Town Meeting Tour 2002, with many traveling a significant distance to attend the meetings.
