Ricoh Develops 8 Layer 200GB Optical Disc
November 28, 2005

Sendai, Japan - Japan's Nikkei news service reported that Ricoh, working together with Tohoku University, has developed a 200 GB, eight layer optical disc that could store as much as 18 hours of high definition video.

The current single-layer DVD maximum is 4.7GB. Blu-ray and HD DVD discs have 25 GB per layer and are designed for a maximum of two layers. The news service reported that additional layers result in interference of light reflecting from layer to layer. New technology developed by Photonic Lattice, Inc. in conjunction with Tohoku University and Ricoh uses a special glass plate designed to filter out interfering reflections.

The report said that this new technology uses an optical head with a similar design as that of both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, making it adaptable for either format. Ricoh expects to offer this disc in 2008.
